Quality research requires that it also be communicated effectively. Unfortunately, for some researchers the communications aspect of the research is the most difficult part. This presentation will provide some tips and advice for oral research presentations, which can be useful for conferences and thesis defenses.
Dr. Adrian D. C. Chan received a B.A.Sc. degree in computer engineering from the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada, in 1997, a M.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada in 1999, and a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, NB, Canada in 2003.
He is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, Carleton University and the Associate Director of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Chan is also the webmaster for the IEEE Ottawa EMBS Section, the faculty representative for the Carleton University Engineers Without Borders chapter and the Carleton University IEEE EMBS student club CU@EMBS. His research interests include biological signal processing, pattern recognition, assistive devices, noninvasive sensors, and electronic noses.
Dr. Chan has received a number of awards for presentations and teaching, including 1st place student paper competition, IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS, 2001); 1st place student paper competition, Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society (CMBES, 2002); Capital Educators’ Award, Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation (2008); Teaching Achievement Award, Carleton University (2009); and the Outstanding Educator Award, IEEE Ottawa Section (2011). He is Registered Professional Engineer, a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a member of the IEEE EMBS and Vice-President of the CMBES.
