Abstract

Although infrared imaging has been used for over half a century, very little progress was made on data analysis until recently and thus the technique was of little interest to the medical community. Now, with smaller and more precise cameras and much improved image analysis softwares, medical applications are increasingly possible and medical support for them has improved greatly. The talk will present applications in interesting new areas of research and the encouraging results obtained so far.

Biography

Monique Frize joined Carleton University as Professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering, and the University of Ottawa in the School of Information Technology and Engineering, in July 1997. Her previous position was as Professor in the Electrical Engineering Dept. at the University of New Brunswick (1989-1997) and first Chairholder of the Northern Telecom/NSERC Women in Engineering Chair (for all of Canada). Monique Frize graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Electrical Engineering) from the University of Ottawa, received an Athlone Fellowship and completed a Master's in Philosophy in Electrical Engineering (Engineering in Medicine) at Imperial College of Science and Technology in London (UK), a Master's of Business Administration at the Université de Moncton (New Brunswick), and a doctorate from Erasmus Universiteit in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She worked as a biomedical engineer for 18 years in hospitals. Dr. Frize published over 222 papers in journals and international conferences in the fields of medical instrumentation, artificial intelligence in medicine, infrared imaging, and some articles on ethics for bioengineers and on women in engineering and science. Dr. Frize is a Senior Member of IEEE, inducted as a Member of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (1992), Officer of the Order of Canada (1993) and received five Honorary Degrees from Canadian Universities.
